6 Crucial Steps to Help You Achieve Your Goals

Goals are always easy to set. However, the question is: How do you achieve it after all your plannings and thinkings? The most difficult thing in everything is to start. Perhaps the 6 crucial steps below will guide you through in achieving what you want in your life one day.

1. Set a SPECIFIC GOAL

The first step in setting your goal is to have a specific goal. It has to be as detail as possible so that you can track your performance. It also prevents you from losing your direction. Outlining what you want, when and how will make your goal more achievable.

For example, you intent to understand Korean well in one year time. This idea is somewhat abstract. Instead, set a goal like “I want to learn 1000 Korean vocabulary in one year”. Numbers and figures help you to have a clear picture of what you want to achieve.

Next, you need to break down your goals into small parts. For instance, how many vocabularies you need to learn every day, types of vocabulary, how to learn and where to learn it from. The more specific, the better.

2. Be REALISTIC

Moving on, your goal should be attainable and realistic. This is a good way to motivate yourself because you know you are able to achieve it. Don't say that you aim to learn 100,000 Korean vocabulary in one year while you still need to focus on your work or study. You will probably feel the pressure already before you start to learn anything. Big goals are exciting, but aiming too high might demotivate you. Also, don't set goals that are impossible to achieve like travel to Pluto next year. :P

3. Give MOTIVATION and be POSITIVE

Sometimes, passion for your goal may fade along the way. So, it is important for you to create long-lasting motivation. For example, you can reward yourself if you hit certain targets. This is a good way for you to have more determination to strive better. Besides, you can tell your family and friends about your goal. Their support would be helpful to you too.

Next, I always believe in the law of attraction. You are a magnet attracting what you think. If you always think that “I can’t do it” or “I won’t be able to achieve it”, cases are you will really fail to do it. Project negativity to the world and it will come back to you. So, be positive! Tell yourself some words of affirmation like “you can do it”. As cliché as it sounds, having a ‘can-do attitude,’ (even if you are faking it) can help you achieve your goals.

4. Set a TIMEFRAME for your goal

Every goal you set must have a timeframe so that you know whether you achieved it and how much did you achieve. Just like an assignment, setting a deadline will urge you to take action and work towards it.

If you do not set a timeline, you will probably give up halfway or forget about it sometime. Start looking into your calendar and pick an actual date for your goal to be achieved. Then, you are able to break your goals into small parts and chart your performance, either daily, weekly or monthly.

5. TRACK your progress

Another essential step is always to track your progress. This works as a great reminder for you to remember how far you’ve come, whenever you find yourself doubting how far you can go. By looking at your progress, it can increase your confidence and belief that your goals are achievable and your efforts are starting to pay off.

At the same time, you can evaluate your progress and identify your weakness and ways for you to improve. Pick a way to evaluate like taking photos, record videos, writing diaries or other ways you think is useful for you. Record your progress frequently if you want to achieve goals in the long term.

6. Be prepared for OBSTACLES

Always be prepared that you will eventually face obstacles along the way. Take it as a challenge when you face obstacles or even failures. Acknowledge it and learn from it. Sometimes you will learn better when you face problems. Most importantly, do not give up.

As per J.C. Penny, it is always the start that requires the greatest effort. However, there are no easy routes if you want to achieve your goal. The journey may be rugged but the end results and experiences are definitely rewarding.
